Body Armor – The Evolution of Protection
What exactly is body armor? In simple terms, it is any type of protective armor that is designed to stop a direct shot to the body. This would include anything from handheld guns to large caliber rifles. Some of the most common types of armor include; ballistic nylon, carbon fiber, full metal jacket, Kevlar, and polycarbonate. All of these provide excellent protection from injury but there are some things that all armor have in common and can all help prevent injury to the user. I will go over what each type can do for the user below.
Weight: All body armor is primarily designed
to resist impact with a heavy bullet. Nylon is the lightest and strongest material that is used for this purpose. However, it is still very important to use the right material and proper thickness to make sure that you receive the full protection that you need. In other words, all body armor is bullet-proof, which means that it greatly increases the chances of surviving a shot, reduces the severity of wounds that happen, and gives the user a much higher chance of not being killed. However, all body armor is vulnerable to being penetrated; it could simply be a question of how many times someone gets hit or if it was aimed at the user.
DuraPro Lining: This type of bulletproof vest
is one of the most effective at stopping rifles and shotguns from going through the pelvis. DuraPro is an extremely hard material that is extremely sturdy and offers a tremendous amount of protection. There are also soft versions of this material as well that are just as effective but also lighter and less cumbersome as the hard version. The soft vest generally is more comfortable and easier to put on and remove because of its lighter weight however it does not offer the same amount of protection as the hard version. The fact that it is not as thick or as bulletproof as other vests makes it more susceptible to penetration and more susceptible to shooting injuries.
Tactical Gear: With today’s emphasis on tactical situations
and military activities more people are looking for ways to stay protected when working in such areas. One of the most effective ways to do this is to wear body armor. It is not always necessary to utilize the hard versions because of their vulnerabilities. Often using tactical vests and body armor will suffice in most situations. If a vest is not available then one should consider using the soft versions. They are still just as effective and often more comfortable as the hard armor plates.
Bulletproof vests and body armor
can come in any of the following types. For low-bullet caliber items, the least effective would be the lightweight polyethylene terephthalate or Polypropylene fiberglass. However, although these products may provide minimal protection they can still absorb and deflect bullets. If one is interested in purchasing the thicker but more effective bulletproof vests then they will need to look at the bullet-resistant materials which are more often found in conjunction with a vest. The material which is found in the vests and other protective gear is generally made of a very dense fabric such as carbon fiber, Kevlar, or epoxy-fiberglass.
Bulletproof vests and other armor plates
are a great way to protect ourselves from injury in an active shooter situation. In many situations being bulletproof is not enough and one must have some sort of protection against high-velocity firearms. The ballistic nylon is one of the newest and greatest improvements in our protective force. It is capable of stopping all bullet penetration, even stopping high-velocity firearms, as well as stopping high-impact percussion projectiles. Its many uses make it one of the most useful products for our security forces today.
